Review Ortlieb Fork Pack Plus 4.1l

The Ortlieb Fork-Packs are a great way to add more space to your bike packing, touring  setup without adding too many kilos.

The design is simple and effective, allowing you to bring those extra items along for the trip.

With Ortlieb high quality materials and waterproofing you can rely on them for whatever adventure.  We put Ortlieb’s new Fork-Pack system to the test on a 3 day tour last summer.

How does it work ?

The bags use a simple locking device at the top and 2 lugs on the bottom, these fix to a bracket that is mounted on the forks using 2 metal bands that are tighten by a screw fixing. This was a little fiddly, but once the bands were in place and located properly in the clamps, the tightening of the screws secured the bracket in place easily. It took me about 30 minutes to fix both brackets.

The spanners are supplied with the bags but you will need pliers and some heat to shrink the plastic protection for the metal band.

Our brackets were fixed on to steel forks. If you have carbon forks you should check if the fixings are suitable.

Whats in the bag ?

The bags were a useful storage addition. We used one bag each to carry our extra layers, arm leg warmers, buff, gloves, over boots and poncho.

In addition one bag also carried our electric cables, batteries, and adapters for all our gadgets. The other carried medicine and the first aid kit.

For this first tour I did not notice the extra weight on the front forks and there was no difference in the handling of the bike.

So are they worth the money?

For around 100 euro full price, that is 12.5 euro per litre of storage, they are expensive, but there is no doubting the quality.

On tour the simplicity of removing items was great and with the roll top it was no hassle to access. There was no rain on the tour so waterproofing was not tested. (Our other bags are Ortleib this has never been a problem) All our items stayed clean.
